『ゲール古代史―高地スコットランドのドルイド教に関して』

著者 J・スミスは18世紀スコットランド・アーガイルシャーの聖職者で、本書の出版を皮切りに 1798 年にかけて数多くのゲール文化に関する著作を発表した。キリスト教の聖職にありながらもこうした著作をものした背景には、高地スコットランド人たるアイデンティティー探索の欲求が大きく作用したものであろう。著者の古代ゲール文化に対する態度は、非常に客観的で、祖先の歴史をありのままに再現しようという意志に貫かれている。特に、ゲール文化の担い手であったドルイド僧に関しては、それまでの一切の先入観を排し、当時にまで伝えられていた伝承詩歌の研究という民俗学的手法で、その実像に迫っている。スコットランド史の深層を照らしだしたこの名著は、200 年前の刊行であることを全く意識させない素晴らしい研究書である。
