著者(1813-1860)はフランス人で、旅行家として高名なラザリスト修道会司祭。著者は他に『タタール・チベットの旅の回想記 Recollections of a Journey through Tartary and Thibet』を公刊している。この時の中国辺境の調査を中断せざるを得なかったが故に、著者は、本書で扱われた旅行を企画した。中国の建造物、政治、民俗、風習などを知る資料として、非常に実証的な書物と言えるが、何よりも全2巻にまとめられた中国全土の地誌は、旅行者としての著者の確かな眼を感じさせるものがある。
