古代中世史の尚古研究において必要とされる古語の知識を修得するための辞典。ローマ帝国以降の各国の勃興、諸部族、諸王、諸候、諸位階、諸制度など、あらゆる事項を収録している。著者スペルマン(1562-1641)は、郷里ノーフォークの按察官やアイルランド視察官などを経た後ロンドンに移り、尚古家としての業績を残して同地に歿した。本書は彼の代表的著作である。
