著者は、1929年から1952年にかけてバーミンガム大学の図書館長を務めていた人物。アングロ=サクソンによる歴史が始まる以前の、約5世紀に亘る文献を網羅した貴重な書誌。ローマ人による一次資料から後代の研究書にいたるまで、考え抜かれた分類項目の下、非常に的確に整理されているのが大きな特長。別巻の索引も著者別、主題別、個人名別、地名別と完璧で、研究者が縦横無尽に活用できるよう配慮されている。
